How to Protect Your Business Through Updated Technology

Oct 31, 2018

Technology is always evolving, improving and becoming more secure. Users should always strive for maximum security in their technology regardless what solutions are being used, but especially when they run a business that depends on it. One simple way to protect your technology from unwanted intruders is to make sure the software is always kept up-to-date. Today, we bring focus to the importance of keeping platforms updated and safe to use.

Big technology companies will often offer upgrades and notify users as soon as a vulnerability is identified. Many also phase out older solutions, just to ensure that there is no risk to its users. For example, the four major browsers used today have all chosen to end support for the outdated TLS 1.0 and 1.1 standards in an effort to protect users and make the internet safer to browse. Apple, Google, Microsoft and Mozilla have the most used browsers today and even though there are no significant vulnerabilities with up-to-date implementations of TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1, the technology companies all decided that moving to newer versions will help ensure a more secure browsing experience for everyone.

Another example of software that is being phased out in favor of newer, more secure solutions is the end-of-life of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and Windows 2008 products. Microsoft will end extended support for their SQL Server 2008 in 2019 and for Windows 2008 in 2020. People using these products beyond expiration will become more vulnerable to cyber-attacks as Microsoft will no longer be releasing security patches. If you are an Agilysys customer, you can see what this end-of-life means for you here.

When running a business, your IT system is the very core of your operation. Many are entirely dependent on consistently performing technology so having systems that are running safely is a must.
