From Coast to Coast, Casinos Reach Out to Neighbors in Need

Apr 01, 2020

As casinos close their doors to do their part and help ‘flatten the coronavirus curve,’ what will happen to all the perishable food stocked in their kitchens?  Today we focus on two remarkable stories of casino operators who reached out to their neighboring communities to lend a much-needed hand.

Executive Banquet Chef at Northern Quest Casino, Frank Comito, knew exactly what to do. He reached out to the Union Gospel Mission, a charitable organization providing meals, education, shelter, and support services to those who are struggling in the community. Northern Quest donated approximately 500 pounds of chicken and beef, as well as 14 pallets of food to community banks in Spokane, Cusick, and Newport. “We are literally doing the best we can to make the best of a bad situation,” Frank said in a comment provided to The Spokesman-Review. “People are being fed during a very difficult time, and we couldn’t be happier.”

Mohegan Sun Casino has also extended its support after closing its doors in mid-March. The casino jumped into action by donating their perishables with two truckloads, equivalent to 15,000 meals, to United Way of Southeastern Connecticut. The extraordinary donation amounted to twenty pallets of fresh fruit and vegetables, dairy, and other perishable food items to distribute among United Way's network of 60+ traditional pantries across Southeastern Connecticut. In a statement published on the company's news page, and provided by Jeff Hamilton, President & General Manager of Mohegan Sun: “It’s been a tough week for many communities and businesses alike, but to team up with United Way of Southeastern CT and ensure we make good use of a significant amount of surplus food was really inspiring."

Agilysys honors both Northern Quest Casino and Mohegan Sun Casino for their contributions to their communities during our current crisis.
